When you think about Christian influence, you might picture church services, Bible studies, and mission trips. But today, some of the most visible faith conversations are happening on stages, in stadiums, on social media, and even on red carpets. From athletes praying on the field to actors sharing testimonies on talk shows, Christian culture is showing up in places many believers never expected.
So how do we think about Christian entertainment, media, and sports figures? What role do they play in the Kingdom—and what does it mean for how we live, watch, listen, and cheer?
Let’s explore this together.
1. Christians in the Spotlight: More Than Just Famous Faces
Every generation has its share of well-known believers—singers, athletes, filmmakers, influencers—who openly talk about Jesus. Some become beloved role models, and others raise tough questions about authenticity and consistency. But behind the headlines is a key biblical truth:
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.”
— Matthew 5:14 (ESV)
Public Christian figures are visible “cities on a hill.” They may be musicians writing worship songs that circle the globe, filmmakers creating faith-based movies, or athletes giving glory to God after a big win. Their influence can:
- Normalize faith in public spaces: When an athlete prays on the field or a musician talks about Jesus at an awards show, it reminds the world that faith is real, present, and active.
- Open doors for gospel conversations: A single interview or testimony online might spark curiosity in people who’d never step into a church.
- Encourage believers in hard environments: Christians in secular industries often feel alone; seeing someone “make it” with integrity can strengthen their resolve.
But there’s also pressure. Public faith can be misunderstood, scrutinized, or politicized. Many Christian celebrities wrestle with how much to share, when to speak, and how to handle personal struggles under a microscope.
That’s why we must remember: famous Christians are still just Christians—sinners saved by grace (Ephesians 2:8–9), growing and learning like the rest of us. They’re not perfect, and they’re not meant to replace Christ as our ultimate example.
2. The Spiritual Power of Stories, Songs and Screens
Entertainment isn’t neutral. The stories we watch, the music we listen to, the influencers we follow—these shape how we think about identity, purpose, relationships, and God.
Scripture reminds us:
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
— Proverbs 4:23 (NIV)
Guarding our hearts doesn’t mean hiding from every movie, song, or game. It means being wise and discerning about what we consume and celebrate.
How Christian Creators Make a Difference
Christian writers, filmmakers, actors, and musicians can influence culture in powerful ways:
- Telling redemptive stories: Films and shows with themes of forgiveness, sacrifice, truth, and hope echo the gospel, even when Jesus’ name isn’t explicitly mentioned.
- Writing music that feeds the soul: Worship and Christian music can put Scripture into our hearts and give us words to pray in every season.
- Challenging cultural lies: Through art and commentary, Christian media voices can confront false narratives about identity, success, love, and freedom.
Think of how a single song has lifted you in a dark season, or how a testimony on a podcast strengthened your faith. Media can be a megaphone for the message of Christ when it’s grounded in truth and humility.
Our Role as Viewers and Listeners
As Christians, we’re not just passive consumers—we’re responsible stewards. Paul urges us:
“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”
— 1 Corinthians 10:31 (NIV)
That includes what we stream, scroll, and support.
Some practical questions to ask:
- Does this content draw me closer to God—or slowly dull my love for Him?
- Does it normalize sin or mock what God calls holy?
- Would I be comfortable watching or listening to this with Jesus sitting right beside me?
We won’t always agree about every movie, song, or show, and that’s okay. But we all share the call to pursue holiness (1 Peter 1:15–16) and to be transformed by the renewing of our minds (Romans 12:2). Our playlists and watchlists are part of that journey.
3. Faith on the Field: Athletes as Witnesses and Worshipers
Sports hold a unique place in culture. Stadiums are modern cathedrals of excitement; athletes become heroes for millions. For Christian athletes, this creates a huge opportunity—and a huge responsibility.
Consider how sports intersect with faith:
-
Discipline and self-control: Training, practice, and perseverance mirror the spiritual life. Paul even uses athletic imagery:
“Every athlete exercises self-control in all things… So I do not run aimlessly.”
— 1 Corinthians 9:25–26 (ESV) -
Platform and influence: A post-game interview mentioning Jesus can reach more people in 30 seconds than many sermons will in a year.
-
Character under pressure: How an athlete responds to victory, defeat, injury, or criticism can demonstrate Christlike humility and trust.
When you see a believer kneel in prayer after a game, write Scripture on their shoes, or talk about faith in tough seasons, you’re seeing the gospel lived out in real time. Their witness isn’t just in what they say, but in how they compete—with integrity, fairness, respect, and joy.
The Danger of Idolatry
There’s also a warning here—for all of us who love sports and entertainment. It’s easy to let our favorite Christian quarterback, coach, or artist become a kind of spiritual shortcut or even an idol.
The first commandment is still clear:
“You shall have no other gods before me.”
— Exodus 20:3 (ESV)
Cheering for godly athletes is great. Admiring faithful artists and influencers is encouraging. But we must never confuse a visible Christian with the Christ they point to. Our ultimate allegiance is to Jesus, not to any team, brand, or personality.
4. How Everyday Believers Can Engage Culture Faithfully
You may never headline a concert, star in a movie, host a podcast, or play in a championship game. But your role in Christian culture is just as real and important. Every believer is called to live as “ambassadors for Christ” (2 Corinthians 5:20), wherever God has placed them.
Here are some ways you can engage with entertainment, media, and sports in a Christ-centered way:
1. Pray for Public Christian Figures
Instead of only critiquing or celebrating from a distance, pray:
- For their spiritual protection and purity
- For wise counselors and strong local church connections
- For courage to speak the truth in love
- For humility in success and peace in failure
Paul often asked churches to pray for his boldness and faithfulness (Ephesians 6:19–20). Public Christian figures need that same covering.
2. Support What Honors God
Where you spend your attention, time, and money matters. Consider:
- Streaming and sharing Christ-honoring music, films, and content
- Attending events that clearly lift up Jesus
- Subscribing to or following creators who handle faith with depth and integrity
Every view, share, and ticket is a tiny vote for the kind of culture you want to see.
3. Practice Discernment Without Self-Righteousness
Some Christians withdraw completely from mainstream culture; others watch and listen to anything without thinking. Scripture calls us to something better: discernment.
Ask the Holy Spirit to help you:
- Draw wise boundaries for yourself and your family
- Talk openly about challenging content instead of pretending it doesn’t exist
- Respond with grace instead of harsh judgment when others land in different places
We can take sin seriously without becoming self-righteous cultural police.
4. Shine Where You Are
You may not have a million followers—but you have neighbors, coworkers, classmates, and friends. Your workplace can be your mission field. Your social media can be a place of encouragement and truth. Your conversations can point people to Christ.
Jesus didn’t call only celebrities to be salt and light. He called all of us (Matthew 5:13–16).
Conclusion: Let’s Live, Watch and Cheer for the Glory of God
Christian culture in entertainment, media, and sports is bigger than a few famous names. It’s the ongoing story of God’s people bringing His light into every corner of the world—stages, screens, stadiums, and social feeds included.
As you enjoy movies, music, games, and shows, remember:
- Keep your eyes on Jesus, not just on Christian celebrities.
- Let Scripture, not culture, define what is good, true, and beautiful.
- Pray for those in the spotlight, and be faithful in the smaller stage God has given you.
Ask the Lord today: “How do You want to use me in the culture around me?”
Then take a step—pray, encourage a Christian creator or athlete, share a Christ-centered song or film, or simply choose content that draws your heart closer to Him.
The world is watching. Let’s make sure that, in everything, they see more of Christ.
