Church Culture and Trends: How Modern Congregations Engage Media and Entertainment

In a world overflowing with content, it’s easy to feel like Christian faith is being pushed to the margins. But look a little closer, and you’ll see something powerful happening: believers in film, music, media, and sports are quietly—and sometimes boldly—shining the light of Christ in places many of us never step foot. They carry the gospel not only in their words, but in their character, their choices, and the way they respond to pressure when everyone is watching.

Jesus called His followers “the light of the world” and “a city set on a hill” (Matthew 5:14–16). That doesn’t stop at the church doors. It includes movie sets, recording studios, newsrooms, social media feeds, and sports arenas. Let’s explore how God is using Christian culture and public figures today, and what that means for how we live and engage with the world around us.

1. Christian Storytelling in Movies, TV, and Streaming

For a long time, Christians often viewed Hollywood and mainstream entertainment with suspicion—and in many cases, for good reason. But over the last couple of decades, God has raised up filmmakers, writers, and producers who feel called to tell stories that point to Jesus, wrestle honestly with faith, and offer hope in a dark world.

The Rise of Faith-Based Films

We’ve seen an explosion of faith-based and faith-influenced films and series—stories about redemption, forgiveness, courage, and calling. Many of these don’t preach from a pulpit but show the fruit of the gospel in people’s lives. This matters because stories shape how we see the world. When we watch narratives that affirm biblical truth—about the value of every person, the reality of sin, the possibility of redemption—we’re reminded that God is still at work.

God has always used storytelling. Jesus Himself taught in parables—simple, everyday stories that revealed deep spiritual truth (Matthew 13:34–35). Today’s Christian filmmakers and creators are doing something similar: taking familiar struggles—broken families, grief, doubt, temptation—and shining the light of Christ into them.

Believers Behind the Scenes

Some of the most powerful faith influence in entertainment never shows up on screen. It happens backstage and in writers’ rooms—Christians who:

  • Refuse to compromise on integrity, even when it costs them.
  • Advocate for more accurate and respectful portrayals of faith.
  • Pray for cast and crew and quietly encourage those who are searching.

Their work reminds us that obedience to God isn’t always dramatic or public. Often, it’s the quiet decision to honor Christ in the small things, trusting that “your Father who sees in secret will reward you” (Matthew 6:4).

2. Christian Music and Media: Worship Beyond Sunday

If you’ve noticed worship songs on mainstream charts or Christian artists collaborating with secular musicians, you’re seeing a bigger trend: the walls between “church music” and “the rest of the world” are shifting. God is placing Christian voices where many people who’d never attend a Sunday service can still hear truth wrapped in melody and story.

Worship as Witness

Modern worship music has spread globally through streaming platforms, YouTube, and social media. People in every kind of season—grief, anxiety, joy, transition—are finding words to pray through songs birthed in local churches.

Think of Paul’s encouragement in Colossians 3:16: “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly… singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs.” Worship doesn’t have to stay inside church walls. When believers share music that glorifies God, they’re placing Scripture, praise, and spiritual encouragement into the playlists of people who might not even know they’re hungry for Him.

Christian Voices in Podcasts, Social Media, and Journalism

Beyond music, God is using Christian voices in:

  • Podcasts that tackle theology, relationships, culture, and mental health from a biblical lens.
  • Social media accounts that share short devotions, testimonies, and practical wisdom.
  • Journalists and commentators who bring a moral and spiritual perspective into public conversations.

Philippians 4:8 gives us a kind of filter for media: “whatever is true… honorable… just… pure… lovely… commendable… think about these things.” Christians in media are not only consuming content by this standard; they’re creating it. They’re offering a different kind of voice—one that honors truth, respects others, and points ultimately to Christ, even while engaging tough cultural issues.

As believers, we’re called to be discerning consumers too. The content we watch, listen to, and share is forming our hearts. Part of Christian culture today is learning to ask: “Does this draw me closer to Christ or quietly pull me away?”

3. Athletes of Faith: Competing for a Higher Crown

Sports are one of the most powerful global platforms. Stadiums are full, screens are lit, and millions are watching every move. In that environment, when an athlete gives glory to God, prays on the field, or openly talks about their faith, people notice.

Faith Under Pressure

Christian athletes at the top of their game know what it means to perform under pressure. They also know what it means to fail publicly. But whether they’re winning championships or battling injuries, their responses can reflect something deeper than talent: dependence on God.

The apostle Paul often used athletic imagery to describe the Christian life. He wrote, “Every athlete exercises self-control in all things… They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable” (1 Corinthians 9:25). When a Christian athlete talks about their identity being rooted in Christ rather than in stats or trophies, they’re living out that truth.

We’ve seen many public testimonies from athletes who:

  • Kneel in prayer after a big play, not as a show, but as a habit of giving glory to God.
  • Talk about how Christ carried them through injuries, losses, and personal struggles.
  • Use their influence to support ministries, mission work, and community outreach.

Their example reminds us that no matter where we’re placed—office, classroom, home, or gym—we can treat our work as worship and our platform, big or small, as a tool for the kingdom.

Character Beyond the Highlight Reel

Christian sports figures also model biblical character: humility, teamwork, self-control, and perseverance. When an athlete refuses to retaliate, encourages a struggling teammate, or gives credit to others, they reflect the heart of Philippians 2:3: “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.”

Fans might first notice the spectacular play, but often it’s the quiet act of grace or integrity that leaves the deepest mark.

4. Living as Everyday Witnesses in a Media-Saturated World

It’s easy to admire Christian celebrities or public figures and forget something important: the same Spirit who empowers them lives in every believer. You may never lead a stadium in prayer or sign a record deal, but your life, your words, and your choices are just as valuable to God’s kingdom.

Your Platform, Right Where You Are

God has given each of us a “platform”—not necessarily followers or fans, but relationships and spaces He’s entrusted to us:

  • Your workplace or school
  • Your family and friendships
  • Your online presence
  • Your church and community

The question isn’t, “How big is my influence?” but, “Am I being faithful with what God has given me?” Jesus said, “Whoever is faithful with very little will also be faithful with much” (Luke 16:10). The same faithfulness required of a famous athlete or artist is required of the believer serving quietly without cameras or applause.

Being Wise and Hopeful Consumers of Culture

Christian culture today isn’t just about what gets produced; it’s about how we, as followers of Jesus, interact with what’s out there.

A few practical ways to engage:

  • Discern what you watch and listen to. Ask: Does this align with or undermine God’s truth?
  • Support Christ-honoring content. When films, music, or media shine the light of Christ, share them, talk about them, and encourage the creators.
  • Have conversations, not just reactions. When entertainment raises tough questions about morality, identity, or purpose, discuss them through a biblical lens with friends and family.
  • Guard your heart. Proverbs 4:23 says, “Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.” What we take in shapes what flows out.

Conclusion: Shining Where God Has Placed You

Christian culture in entertainment, media, and sports isn’t perfect, but it’s growing, maturing, and reaching people far beyond church walls. God is at work through filmmakers who tell stories of redemption, musicians who lead strangers into worship, journalists who speak truth with grace, and athletes who play for a higher audience.

Yet God is just as interested in how you live out your faith at your desk, in your living room, or on your local field as He is in what happens on a global stage.

“Whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus” (Colossians 3:17). That “whatever” includes watching movies, listening to music, scrolling social media, and cheering for your favorite team.

Take a moment this week to:

  • Pray for Christians in entertainment, media, and sports—that they would stay rooted in Christ and bold in their witness.
  • Evaluate your own media habits and ask God to guide what you consume and share.
  • Look for one small way to use your platform—online or in person—to point someone toward Jesus.

The world is watching. Let’s make sure what they see draws their eyes to Christ.
