Daily Devotional: Joshua 1:9
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
Let’s talk about courage.
Not the movie kind of courage—the dramatic, slow-motion, soundtrack-playing-in-the-background kind of bravery that ends with applause and a triumphant victory. No, I’m talking about the kind of courage that shows up in the quiet moments. The kind of courage God calls us to in Joshua 1:9.
It’s the courage to keep going when you don’t feel strong. The courage to trust Him when the path ahead looks impossible. The courage to show up when fear is screaming in your ear, telling you to stay behind.
Joshua knew something about this kind of courage.
He wasn’t stepping into an easy situation when God spoke these words to him. Moses—the legendary leader who had brought the Israelites out of Egypt—was gone. The weight of leading an entire nation had fallen squarely on Joshua’s shoulders. And to make things even more intense, his first task was to lead them into the Promised Land—a place filled with enemies, battles, and challenges that looked far bigger than his ability.
It’s easy to imagine Joshua feeling overwhelmed. Afraid. Maybe even tempted to quit before he started.
But that’s exactly when God steps in with this command—not a suggestion, not a pep talk, but a command.
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”
God wasn’t asking Joshua to muster up courage on his own. He wasn’t telling him to rely on his own strength or confidence to face the challenges ahead. He was reminding Joshua of one simple, powerful truth:
“The Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
That’s the foundation of courage—not our abilities, but His presence.
God wasn’t asking Joshua to be fearless because the challenges weren’t real. He was asking him to be fearless because He is real. Because the God who parted the Red Sea, defeated Pharaoh, and provided manna in the wilderness wasn’t going anywhere.
And that same God is with you today.
Whatever you’re facing—whether it’s a battle, a decision, a season of uncertainty, or just the weight of showing up for another day—you don’t have to face it alone.
You don’t have to be strong on your own. You don’t have to muster up courage from thin air. You don’t have to pretend you’re fearless when you’re not.
You just have to trust that He’s with you.
He’s with you in the boardroom, the classroom, the hospital room, the living room. He’s with you in the moments that feel impossible, the ones that feel ordinary, and the ones that feel downright overwhelming.
And because He’s with you, fear doesn’t get to win.
Discouragement doesn’t get the final word.
Courage doesn’t mean you won’t feel afraid—it means you won’t let fear stop you.
So today, let Joshua 1:9 be your reminder.
God isn’t asking you to be strong and courageous because you’re capable of handling everything on your own. He’s asking you to be strong and courageous because He’s with you. Wherever you go.
That’s the promise. That’s the truth. That’s the reason you can take the next step, even when it feels hard.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for Your promise to be with me wherever I go. Help me to trust You when fear tries to take over. Remind me that my courage doesn’t come from my ability, but from Your presence. Give me strength to take the next step today, knowing You are right here with me. Amen.
Now go. Take the step. Be strong. Be courageous. He’s already there.
