“You are the God who sees me.” — Genesis 16:13 “You are the God who sees me.” — Genesis 16:13

The Comfort of Being Seen

There’s a deep longing in every human heart to be seen. Not just noticed in passing, not just acknowledged with a polite nod, but truly seen.

To have someone look past your surface and into the depths of who you are. To have someone understand your struggles, your efforts, your unspoken prayers, and your quiet tears.

But what happens when you don’t feel seen? When the people around you are too busy or distracted to notice? When you feel like you’re carrying burdens no one else can see?

That’s where Hagar was.

Hagar’s Story: A God Who Sees

Hagar’s story is one of the most poignant examples of God’s heart for the overlooked.

She was a servant, thrust into circumstances she didn’t choose. She was used, dismissed, and ultimately abandoned. Pregnant, scared, and alone, Hagar fled into the wilderness, carrying the weight of rejection and despair.

No one came after her. No one asked if she was okay.

But then, in the middle of her isolation, God showed up.

He didn’t just see her. He spoke to her. He called her by name. He assured her that He was not blind to her pain, her fear, or her future.

And in that moment, Hagar gave God a name:

El Roi. The God Who Sees Me.

Being Seen Is the Rescue

What’s striking about Hagar’s encounter with God is that He didn’t immediately fix her circumstances. He didn’t wave a magic wand and make everything better.

What He did was far more profound.

He saw her.

And sometimes, being seen is the rescue.

It’s the reminder that you’re not invisible. That your struggles matter. That you are not alone.

El Roi — the God who sees you — is still seeing you today.

He sees the early mornings and the late nights. He sees the moments when you hold it together for everyone else while feeling like you’re falling apart inside. He sees the burdens you carry that no one else even knows about.

And He is not indifferent to any of it.

What It Means to Be Seen by God

When God sees you, He doesn’t just notice you — He knows you.

He knows the number of hairs on your head (Luke 12:7). He knows your thoughts before you think them (Psalm 139:2). He knows the plans He has for you, plans to give you hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11).

His seeing is not passive. It’s active. It’s purposeful.

When God sees you, He moves toward you. He comforts you. He strengthens you. He reminds you of who you are and whose you are.

You are not forgotten. You are not overlooked. You are held in the gaze of a God who loves you more deeply than you can imagine.

A Prayer for Today

Lord,

Thank You for being the God who sees me. Thank You for reminding me that I am never invisible to You, even when I feel unseen by the world around me.

Help me to rest in the truth that Your eyes are always on me — not in judgment, but in love. Help me to trust that You know my struggles, my fears, and my hopes, and that You are with me in all of it.

Teach me to see others the way You see me. Help me to notice the people who feel unseen, to love them the way You love me, and to remind them that they are never alone.

Thank You for being El Roi — the God who sees.

Amen.

A Word for Your Heart Today

You might feel unseen right now. You might feel like the people around you don’t notice the effort you’re putting in, the struggles you’re facing, or the weight you’re carrying.

But El Roi does.

He sees you. He knows you. He loves you.

Take comfort in this truth: You are fully known and fully loved by the God who created you. You don’t have to strive for His attention. You already have it.

And that changes everything.

“The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in His love He will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.” — Zephaniah 3:17
