You’re Not Behind—You’re Being Prepared

Lately, I’ve been feeling it. You know, that feeling—the one that sneaks up on you when you’re scrolling through social media or catching up with an old friend. It’s that little voice that whispers, “You’re not doing enough. You’re not where you’re supposed to be. Look at them—they’ve got it all figured out, and you’re still over here trying to piece it together.”

Maybe you’ve felt it too. You see someone else winning while you’re still waiting. You see someone else getting the breakthrough you’ve been praying for. You see someone else living the dream (that damn Jones family, trying to keep up…right??) —and you’re still grinding, still hoping, still wondering if your time will ever come. And then, almost like clockwork, the questions start swirling: “Am I behind? Did I miss my moment? Is it too late for me?”

But here’s the truth God reminded me of this week, and I hope it encourages you as much as it did me: You are not behind. You are being prepared.

Ecclesiastes 3:11 says, “He has made everything beautiful in its time.” Not in your time. Not in their time. In His time. That’s both comforting and—let’s be honest—kind of frustrating. Because wouldn’t it be nice if God handed us a timeline? Just a little heads-up? Like, “Hey, this thing you’re praying for? Give it six months, and you’re good.”

But that’s not how God works. He’s not in a rush. And while we’re over here tapping our watches and checking the calendar, He’s busy working behind the scenes, putting every piece in place, preparing us for what’s to come. Think about Moses. He was 80 years old when God called him to lead Israel out of Egypt. Eighty! Most people are retiring at 80, and Moses was just getting started. Or David. He was a shepherd boy, forgotten by his own family, when God anointed him as king. But he didn’t go straight to the throne. Nope. He spent years running from Saul, hiding in caves, probably wondering if God’s promise would ever come true. But those years weren’t wasted—God was building a king in the wilderness.

And then there’s Jesus. Thirty years of preparation for three years of ministry. Thirty years of waiting for the moment when His purpose would unfold. If God can take 80 years to prepare Moses, 30 years to prepare Jesus, and a whole lot of cave time to prepare David, then maybe—just maybe—He’s not in a rush with you either.

What if your delay isn’t denial? What if the waiting is actually the work? We tend to think of waiting as wasted time. Like we’re sitting in some kind of spiritual DMV, flipping through old magazines and tapping our feet, just waiting for our number to be called. But what if the waiting is where God does His best work? What if He’s using this season to grow something in you that you’ll need later? What if He’s preparing you for the very thing you’re praying for?

It’s easy to look at someone else’s life and think they’ve got it all figured out. But you don’t know what they went through to get there. You don’t know the nights they cried, the times they wanted to quit, the sacrifices they made. Stop comparing your Chapter 3 to someone else’s Chapter 20. Their journey is theirs. Yours is yours. And God’s timing is perfect for both.

Here’s another thing I’m learning: grace isn’t just for the people who hurt you. It’s also for the people who are ahead of you. You know the ones I’m talking about. The people who seem to have it all together. The ones who got the promotion, the relationship, the dream house, the picture-perfect life—while you’re still waiting for your turn.

It’s easy to feel bitter or jealous. To wonder why God blessed them and not you. But here’s the deal: they’re not your enemy. They’re not your competition. They’re your brothers and sisters in Christ. And maybe—just maybe—God is using their success to show you what’s possible for you. There’s enough grace to go around. Enough favor. Enough room at the table. Someone else’s breakthrough doesn’t delay your blessing. Their success doesn’t diminish your calling. Their moment doesn’t take away from yours.

So, what do we do with all this? How do we navigate the waiting without losing our joy? Here’s what I’m working on (and yes, I’m still a work in progress): Stop comparing. Your timeline is not their timeline. God’s plan for you is unique. Trust that He knows what He’s doing, even when it doesn’t make sense. Trust the process. God is doing something in the waiting that you can’t see yet. He’s weaving together the threads of your story in ways that will make sense later. Extend grace—to the people ahead of you, to the people behind you, and most importantly, to yourself. And finally, keep showing up. Even when it feels like nothing is happening. Even when it feels like everyone else is winning. Even when it feels like you’re behind. Faithfulness in the small things matters.

Here’s the last thing I’m learning: celebrate other people’s wins—even when I’m still waiting for mine. It’s not always easy, but it’s freeing. Because when you can genuinely celebrate someone else’s success, it reminds you that God is still in the business of doing miracles. It reminds you that He’s still moving, still working, still writing stories of redemption and breakthrough. And if He did it for them, He can do it for you too.

So, if you’re feeling behind today, let me remind you: you’re not. You’re being prepared. God is making everything beautiful in its time—including you, your story, and the breakthrough you’re waiting for. Trust Him. Trust the process. Trust the timing.

And while you’re at it, find someone to celebrate this week. Cheer them on. Celebrate their win. And then keep showing up for your own journey, knowing that God’s not finished with you yet.

What’s one thing you’re waiting for right now?

Grace and joy,
