Living Out Faith in a World That’s Always “On”
We live in a world where our screens rarely go dark. Between streaming shows, social media, sports highlights, and the constant scroll of news, our hearts are being discipled by something all the time—whether we realize it or not.
As followers of Jesus, that means we have to ask some honest questions:
- How do we engage culture without becoming consumed by it?
- What does it look like to be faithful to Christ in entertainment, media, and sports?
- How can we support believers who are already shining the light of Christ in these spaces?
The Bible reminds us, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind” (Romans 12:2). That doesn’t mean we must run away from culture. Instead, it means we are called to engage it with renewed minds, discernment, and a heart anchored in God’s truth.
Let’s explore what that can look like in Christian culture, entertainment, media, and sports.
Christian Entertainment: More Than Just “Clean Content”
Christian entertainment—whether it’s music, movies, books, or comedy—isn’t just about avoiding bad language or inappropriate content. At its best, it’s about telling the truth: the truth about God, the truth about people, and the truth about hope in Christ.
Stories that Point to a Greater Story
We love stories because we’re made in the image of a storytelling God. Jesus Himself used parables—simple, everyday stories—to reveal deep spiritual truths (Matthew 13:34–35). Good Christian entertainment taps into that same pattern. It doesn’t always have to quote Scripture directly to be powerful; it can illustrate redemption, sacrifice, forgiveness, and grace in ways that resonate deeply with people’s lives.
Think about:
- Films that highlight forgiveness where revenge would have seemed more natural.
- Music that honestly wrestles with doubt yet lands on the faithfulness of God.
- Novels or shows that portray the cost of sin and the beauty of repentance.
These are not “just stories”—they’re echoes of the gospel, pointing to the true story of Christ.
Guarding Our Hearts While Enjoying Good Gifts
Paul says, “All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful” (1 Corinthians 6:12). Not every movie, song, or show is wise for us to watch or listen to—even if everyone else is. Discernment is key.
Two simple questions can help:
- Does this draw my heart closer to Christ or dull my affections for Him?
- Does this normalize or celebrate what God clearly calls sin?
We’ll never find “perfect” entertainment this side of heaven, but we can be intentional. Christian artists and creators need our prayers and support as they navigate an industry that often pulls them in the opposite direction of holiness. When you find a song, book, or film that honors God and tells the truth beautifully, share it. Encourage those who are creating it. That’s one way we can help shape the culture.
Faith in Media: Being Light in the Digital Noise
The media world—news, social platforms, podcasts, and online content—is one of the most powerful shaping forces in modern life. The messages we hear day after day can either cultivate fear, outrage, and division, or they can point us toward wisdom, compassion, and truth.
Consuming Media with a Biblical Filter
Philippians 4:8 gives us a powerful grid: “Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable… think about these things.” That doesn’t mean we ignore hard realities in the world, but it does mean we’re careful about what dominates our thoughts and emotions.
Ask yourself:
- Am I spending more time scrolling than praying?
- Does my media diet feed anxiety, anger, or cynicism more than faith, hope, and love?
- Do I seek out voices who challenge me biblically—or just those who tell me what I want to hear?
We are all being shaped by what we repeatedly watch and hear. The gospel invites us to be “transformed by the renewal of [our] minds” (Romans 12:2), not merely informed by headlines and hot takes.
Christians in Media: Truth-Tellers and Bridge-Builders
God is raising up believers in journalism, filmmaking, podcasting, and digital content creation. Their work might not always carry an explicit “Christian” label, but their integrity, kindness, and commitment to truth can stand out in a world that often celebrates spin over substance.
When Christians serve in media with honesty and humility, they:
- Push back against lies and propaganda by insisting on what is true.
- Model a different way of disagreeing—speaking the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15).
- Highlight stories of hope, reconciliation, and courage that might otherwise be buried.
These believers need courage. There’s pressure to compromise, stay silent about faith, or bend the truth for clicks and ratings. As the Body of Christ, we can support them by:
- Praying regularly for Christians in media and journalism.
- Sharing and promoting content that reflects biblical values and integrity.
- Encouraging young believers who sense a calling into these fields rather than warning them away in fear.
Sports and Faith: Playing for a Higher Glory
Sports uniquely capture our imagination—competition, teamwork, discipline, and the drama of victory and defeat. Stadiums fill with fans; kids dream of going pro. But behind the bright lights, many Christian athletes are quietly seeking to honor Jesus in a high-pressure environment.
Competing with a Kingdom Perspective
The apostle Paul often used athletic imagery to describe the Christian life: “Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things… They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable” (1 Corinthians 9:25). For Christian athletes, this perspective is everything.
They train hard, play to win, and use their gifts fully—but they know the scoreboard isn’t ultimate. Their identity isn’t anchored to stats, contracts, or trophies, but to Christ. That frees them to:
- Show humility in victory, recognizing every gift is from God (James 1:17).
- Respond with grace in defeat, knowing their value doesn’t rise and fall with performance.
- Use their platform to talk about Jesus, serve their communities, and live differently.
You’ve likely seen post-game interviews where athletes thank God or reference their faith. While that can sometimes feel routine, for many it’s a real act of witness—giving credit where it’s due and pointing to a greater hope than the game itself.
The Witness of Character on and off the Field
Fans notice more than talent; they notice character:
- The athlete who refuses to cheat or bend the rules even when no one is watching.
- The coach who cares more about shaping hearts than just winning games.
- The player who treats opponents, referees, and teammates with respect—even under pressure.
Colossians 3:23 speaks into this world: “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” When Christian athletes live this verse, their work ethic and integrity stand out. Whether it’s youth sports or the professional stage, faith-filled sports figures can model what it means to play for the glory of God.
Walking Faithfully in a Culture-Filled World
We’re not called to hide from culture, media, entertainment, or sports. We’re called to live as “salt and light” (Matthew 5:13–16) right in the middle of it.
That means:
- As consumers, we choose wisely, guard our hearts, and seek what draws us closer to Christ.
- As creators and professionals, we tell the truth, work with excellence, and live with integrity for the glory of God.
- As the Church, we encourage, pray for, and practically support those God has placed in influential spaces.
In every arena—on screens, on stages, on fields, and behind microphones—God is still at work. He is calling men and women to be faithful witnesses, to create beauty, to speak truth, and to reflect Christ in places where He is often ignored or misunderstood.
Your Next Step
Take a moment today to invite the Holy Spirit to search your habits and influences. Ask:
- Is there anything I’m watching, listening to, or cheering for that is dulling my love for Jesus?
- How can I intentionally support Christ-honoring creators, media voices, and athletes?
- Is God calling me—or someone I can encourage—into one of these fields?
Pray about it. Talk with a trusted friend or mentor. And wherever God has placed you, live boldly for Christ. The world is watching—but more importantly, the world is in desperate need of the light you carry.
