Daily Devotional: The Mercy You Didn’t See Coming

“Turn to the LORD, and he will have mercy . . . for he will freely pardon.” — Isaiah 55:7

Let’s be honest: “turning to the Lord” sounds easy in theory, but in practice? It can feel like walking into a room where you just knocked over a vase and everyone’s staring. You know you’re guilty. You know you messed up. And you’re pretty sure God’s standing there with His arms crossed, tapping His foot, waiting to lecture you.

But here’s the twist: He’s not.

Isaiah 55:7 flips the script on what we think we deserve. It says that when we turn to God—mess, mistakes, guilt and all—He doesn’t just grudgingly forgive. He doesn’t roll His eyes and say, “Fine, but don’t let it happen again.” No, He has mercy. He freely pardons.

Think about that word: freely. No strings attached. No hoops to jump through. No “clean yourself up first.” Just mercy poured out like water in a desert.

The Problem with Our Math

Here’s where we get stuck: we like to do forgiveness math. We tally up our sins, weigh them on some imaginary scale, and then decide whether we’ve tipped too far into the “unforgivable” zone. Surely this time, we’ve gone too far. Surely God’s grace has a limit.

Spoiler alert: it doesn’t.

God’s mercy doesn’t run out. It doesn’t have fine print or an expiration date. It’s not based on how good you’ve been or how bad you’ve messed up. It’s based on who He is. And He’s the God who loves you so much that He sent His Son to take your place.

Turn Around

The word “turn” in this verse is key. It’s an invitation. God’s not dragging you back to Him kicking and screaming—He’s gently calling, waiting with open arms.

Turning to Him doesn’t mean you have to have it all together. It means you stop running in the opposite direction. It means you stop trying to fix everything on your own. It means you let go of the shame that’s been weighing you down and step into the mercy He’s been holding out all along.

Freely Pardoned

So, what does “freely pardoned” look like in real life?

It looks like peace when you’ve been carrying guilt for years.
It looks like hope when you thought you were too far gone.
It looks like joy when you realize you don’t have to earn what’s already been given.

God’s mercy isn’t a begrudging nod of approval. It’s a full embrace. It’s the Father running to meet the prodigal son, throwing a party, and saying, “You’re home.”

Today’s Invitation

Whatever you’re carrying today—whether it’s regret, shame, or the weight of a bad decision—know this: God’s mercy is bigger. His pardon is free. And His arms are open.

So stop running. Stop hiding. Turn to Him, and let His mercy meet you right where you are.

Because the truth is, you don’t have to fix yourself before you come to God. You just have to come.

Prayer:
Lord, thank You for Your mercy that I don’t deserve but You freely give. Help me to stop running from You and start running to You. Thank You for loving me right where I am and for never giving up on me. Amen.
