Daily Devotional: The Heart Behind the Ashes

“Even now,” declares the LORD, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning. Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love.”
Joel 2:12-13

Ash Wednesday is one of those days that makes us pause. It’s a day when many will wear ashes on their foreheads, a visible sign of repentance and humility before God. But here’s the thing—God isn’t looking for a performance. He’s not impressed by outward displays or empty rituals. What He’s really after? Your heart.

In the time of Joel, people would tear their clothing as a way of showing sorrow and repentance. But God’s message was clear: “Rend your heart and not your garments.” In other words, don’t just go through the motions. Don’t let your repentance stop at the surface. True repentance is about an inward transformation—a heart that’s broken for the things that break God’s heart and a life that’s willing to turn back to Him.

God’s invitation is beautiful: “Even now,” declares the LORD, “return to me with all your heart.” Even now. Even after the mistakes. Even after the wandering. Even after the times we’ve chosen other things over Him. His arms are open, ready to welcome us back because He is “gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love.”

What Does “Returning” Look Like?

Here’s the good news: God isn’t asking for perfection. He’s asking for direction. Returning to Him doesn’t mean you have to have it all figured out. It means taking one step toward Him today, and then another tomorrow, and the next day after that.

So, what does true “return” look like in your life this Lenten season? Maybe it’s carving out time to pray, even if it’s just five minutes in the car. Maybe it’s letting go of a habit or distraction that’s been pulling you away from God. Maybe it’s choosing to forgive someone, even when it’s hard.

Whatever it looks like, know this: it’s not about how far you’ve wandered. It’s about the fact that God is always ready to welcome you back.

A Prayer for Today

Gracious and compassionate Father, thank You for always calling me back to You, no matter how far I’ve gone. Help me to turn my heart toward You this Lenten season—not just with words or actions, but with true repentance and love. Teach me to trust in Your grace and to walk in Your ways, one step at a time. Thank You for being slow to anger and abounding in love. Today, I choose to return to You with all my heart. Amen.

Let’s Reflect

  • What’s one area of your heart that you’ve been holding back from God?
  • What’s one step you can take today to truly return to Him?

Remember, family, it’s not about how perfect your journey looks. It’s about where you’re headed. Let’s choose to walk toward Him, together.
