Daily Devotional: The Boldness to Ask

James 4:2
“You have not because you ask not.”

Let’s be honest—sometimes, we overcomplicate prayer. We tiptoe around God like He’s a busy CEO who doesn’t have time for our little requests. We think, “Well, He knows what I need, so why bother asking?” Or worse, we convince ourselves that asking is selfish, so we just sit silently, hoping He’ll read our minds.

But James 4:2 cuts right through all of that. It’s direct, almost uncomfortably so: “You have not because you ask not.”

God isn’t playing hard to get. He’s not withholding blessings just to see if we’ll squirm. He’s waiting. Waiting for us to trust Him enough to ask. Waiting for us to come to Him with open hands and hearts that say, “I need You.”

The truth is, asking requires humility. It means admitting we don’t have it all figured out, that we can’t do it on our own. That’s hard for some of us. We like to think we’re self-sufficient, that we can handle life without bothering anyone—including God. But the act of asking is an act of surrender. It’s saying, “Lord, I can’t, but You can.”

And here’s the beauty of it: God wants us to ask. Not because He needs to be reminded of what we need—He already knows—but because asking builds relationship. It draws us closer to Him. It shifts our focus from our own limitations to His limitless power.

Think about it: how often do we settle for less simply because we didn’t ask for more? How many blessings are waiting for us on the other side of a prayer we’ve been too afraid or too proud to pray?

Maybe today is the day to ask. To lay it all out there—the big dreams, the small hopes, the impossible situations—and trust that God hears you. He’s not rolling His eyes or keeping score. He’s leaning in, ready to respond.

Today’s Reflection:
What’s the one thing you’ve been holding back from asking God for? Is it a dream that feels too big? A need that feels too small? A prayer you’ve convinced yourself He won’t answer? Take a moment today to ask boldly.

A Prayer for Today:
Lord, forgive me for the times I’ve held back from asking. Teach me to come to You with boldness and humility, trusting that You care about every detail of my life. Help me to see prayer not as a chore, but as a gift—a chance to grow closer to You and to lay my needs at Your feet. I ask today for Your provision, Your wisdom, and Your peace. Amen.
