Daily Devotional: Goodness and Mercy Are Following You

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.”
— Psalm 23:6

There’s something so comforting about this verse, isn’t there? It’s like a deep exhale for your soul.

But let’s be honest—how often do we actually live as though it’s true?

Because life doesn’t always feel like goodness and mercy are following us. Some days feel like chaos is following us. Or stress. Or failure. Or regret.

But here’s the thing: feelings aren’t always facts.

What David is saying here isn’t about how things feel—it’s about what’s true.

And the truth is, goodness and mercy are following you. Right now. Today.

God’s Goodness Is Not Seasonal

Notice the word “surely.”

David doesn’t say, “Hopefully goodness and mercy will follow me.” He doesn’t say, “If I get everything right, then God’s goodness and mercy might show up.”

He says surely.

It’s not a guess. It’s not a gamble. It’s a guarantee.

And here’s the best part: David doesn’t say goodness and mercy follow you only on the good days. He doesn’t say they follow you when life is easy or when you’re at your best.

They follow you all the days of your life.

The good days. The hard days. The ordinary, forgettable days.

Even the days you’d rather not remember.

🔍 What Does “Follow” Really Mean?

The word “follow” in this verse is actually stronger than it sounds in English. In the original Hebrew, it carries the idea of pursuit.

God’s goodness and mercy don’t just trail behind you like a shadow—they actively chase you down.

That means on the days when you feel like you’re running on empty, when you’re overwhelmed, when you’re convinced you’ve wandered too far—God’s goodness and mercy are still in pursuit.

You can’t outrun them.

✝️ A God Who Pursues

This verse is a reminder of who God is.

He’s not a distant deity waiting for you to figure things out. He’s a shepherd who goes after His sheep.

He’s the God who left the ninety-nine to find the one.
The God who ran to meet the prodigal son while he was still far off.
The God who pursues you with love, even when you feel unworthy of it.

His goodness and mercy are not conditional. They’re not based on your performance. They’re rooted in His character.

And His character doesn’t change.

💡 Living in the Pursuit of Grace

What would it look like to live today as though goodness and mercy were actively chasing you?

Maybe it looks like letting go of the guilt you’ve been carrying.
Maybe it looks like trusting that God’s provision will meet you in the uncertainty.
Maybe it looks like pausing long enough to notice the small, quiet ways He’s showing up in your life.

Whatever today holds, you don’t walk into it alone.

Goodness and mercy are right behind you.

🙏 A Prayer for Today

Lord,

Thank You for Your goodness and mercy that follow me every day.
Thank You for pursuing me, even when I’m distracted, discouraged, or distant.

Help me to remember that I am never alone.
Help me to see the ways Your goodness and mercy are showing up in my life today.

And help me to live in a way that reflects Your love to the people around me.

Amen.

Today’s Reflection

Take a moment to look back over the past week. Where can you see God’s goodness and mercy following you?

Maybe it was in a conversation you needed. Or a moment of unexpected peace. Or the simple fact that you made it through another week.

Whatever it was, let gratitude rise up in you.

And as you step into this new week, remember:

Goodness and mercy are still following you.
All the days of your life.
