“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” — John 1:14
At the heart of the Christian faith is this mind-bending, heart-changing truth: God didn’t stay distant. He came near.
He didn’t just send a message. He became the message.
John 1:14 tells us that the Word — the eternal, divine expression of God — became flesh. Jesus didn’t just visit humanity. He became one of us. He took on skin and bone, laughter and tears, hunger and exhaustion. He walked the same earth we walk.
Why?
Because love doesn’t shout from a distance. Love shows up.
Think about what it means for the Word to become flesh.
Jesus didn’t come as a concept or an idea or a theological statement. He came as a person.
He didn’t float above the mess of the world. He entered it. He felt the heat of the sun, the sting of rejection, the ache of loss. He experienced the joy of friendship, the satisfaction of meaningful work, and the beauty of creation.
He didn’t just come to tell us about God’s love. He came to show us what it looks like.
And He didn’t just visit for a moment. He made His dwelling among us.
He stayed.
“We have seen His glory,” John writes.
Not the kind of glory the world looks for. Not the glory of crowns and thrones and power.
The glory of humility. The glory of compassion. The glory of a God who kneels to wash feet, who touches the untouchable, who weeps with the grieving, who forgives the unforgivable.
The glory of a God who would rather die than live without us.
And how did He come?
“Full of grace and truth.”
Not one or the other. Both.
Grace without truth can feel cheap — a kind of empty affirmation that doesn’t challenge us to grow. Truth without grace can feel harsh — a set of rules that crushes rather than frees.
But Jesus brings the perfect balance.
In His grace, He meets us where we are. In His truth, He loves us too much to leave us there.
A God Who Gets It
One of the most beautiful things about Jesus is that He understands.
Whatever you’re feeling today — joy, sadness, fear, frustration, hope, doubt — He gets it.
Because He’s been there.
He knows what it’s like to be human. He knows what it’s like to feel pain, to face temptation, to experience the highs and lows of life.
He knows what it’s like to be misunderstood, underestimated, and betrayed. He knows what it’s like to feel alone.
And because He knows, He can meet you in your mess.
You don’t have to clean yourself up to come to Him. You don’t have to have the perfect prayer or the perfect faith or the perfect life.
You just have to come.
Because He’s already come to you.
A Prayer for Today
Lord,
Thank You for coming near. Thank You for stepping into the messiness of this world and showing us what love looks like.
Help me to remember that You understand what I’m going through. That You’re not distant or detached, but near and present.
Fill me with Your grace and truth today. Teach me to live in a way that reflects Your love, Your kindness, and Your glory.
Thank You for making Your dwelling among us. Thank You for making Your dwelling in me.
Amen.
Today, as you go about your day, let this truth sink in:
God came near.
He didn’t have to. But He chose to. Because He loves you.
And His love isn’t theoretical. It’s personal. It’s real. It’s here.
Whatever you’re facing today, remember — you’re not alone. The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. And His Spirit is still dwelling with us now.
Take a moment to pause. To breathe. To remember.
He’s with you.
And He’s full of grace and truth.
