When Life Doesn’t Go as Planned
If you’re reading this, chances are you’re standing at a crossroads you never expected to face. Perhaps you’ve lost what you thought was your Plan A—the career you poured years into, the relationship you believed would last a lifetime, or the version of life you were so sure God would use for His glory. You had a vision, a hope, a dream, and now it feels like it’s crumbled right in front of you.
And maybe, in the quiet moments, fear has crept in. It whispers doubts that linger in your mind: What now? Did I miss God’s plan? Was this supposed to happen?
If this is where you are right now, I want you to know something: you’re not alone. You’re in good company. Even the most faithful have stood where you stand—uncertain, afraid, and questioning what comes next. Joshua, one of the greatest leaders in biblical history, faced a moment just like this. When his Plan A—the leadership of Moses—was gone, he found himself at a crossroads. But here’s the beautiful truth: God’s promises are not bound to Plan A. His purposes for your life remain steadfast, even when the path takes a turn you never saw coming.
The Crossroads of Fear and Faith
When we think of Joshua, we often picture a mighty warrior, boldly leading the Israelites into the Promised Land. But before he became that courageous leader, Joshua stood at a pivotal moment of fear and uncertainty.
Moses, the man who had led the Israelites out of Egypt, who parted the Red Sea, who spoke with God face-to-face, was gone. For years, Joshua had been his assistant, watching Moses lead with wisdom and strength. And now, the mantle of leadership fell squarely on Joshua’s shoulders.
Can you imagine the weight of that responsibility? The fear that must have gripped his heart? Would he measure up? Could he possibly fill Moses’ shoes? What if he failed?
It’s in this moment of doubt that God speaks directly to Joshua. And His words are as powerful for us today as they were for Joshua thousands of years ago:
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
—Joshua 1:9
God didn’t dismiss Joshua’s fear or pretend it wasn’t real. Instead, He acknowledged it. He didn’t say, “There’s nothing to be afraid of.” No, He said, “Do not be afraid,” because He knew fear was present, but so was His promise.
When Fear Feels Real, So Does God’s Promise
Maybe you’re standing in Joshua’s shoes right now. The job you worked so hard for is gone. The relationship you thought would last forever has ended. The life you envisioned has taken a detour, and you’re left wondering, What now?
Friend, hear this: God’s promises for you are not dependent on everything going according to your plan. His faithfulness isn’t tied to the version of life you thought you’d be living. Just as He was with Joshua, He is with you, even now.
Be strong and courageous.
Do not be afraid.
Do not be discouraged.
The Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.
God’s plans for your life are not limited by your circumstances. They’re not derailed by your detours. His purpose for you is bigger than Plan A.
When Plan A Falls Apart
Here’s the hard truth: we often cling to our plans as if they’re the only way forward. We map out our lives, set goals, and work tirelessly to make them a reality. But when Plan A falls apart, it can feel like everything is crumbling.
Yet God reminds us in Isaiah 55:8-9:
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
What if, instead of falling apart, things are actually falling into place? What if God is using this unexpected turn to lead you to something greater?
Courage in the Face of Fear
Courage doesn’t mean the absence of fear. It means choosing to trust God in the midst of it. Joshua had every reason to be afraid. The Promised Land wasn’t empty; it was filled with fortified cities and powerful armies. But God didn’t ask Joshua to rely on his own strength or strategy. He asked him to trust in His presence and His promise.
“I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses.”
—Joshua 1:3
The same God who promised to be with Joshua is with you today. He knows your fears, your doubts, and your uncertainties. And He’s not asking you to have it all figured out. He’s simply asking you to trust Him, to take the next step, and to believe that His promise is still ahead.
When the Path Looks Different
Sometimes, the hardest part of losing Plan A is letting go of what we thought life would look like. But God’s promise isn’t tied to a specific plan—it’s tied to His purpose.
Moses was Plan A. He was supposed to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land. But when Moses was gone, God didn’t abandon His people. He didn’t say, “Well, that’s it. The plan is ruined.” Instead, He raised up Joshua and fulfilled His promise in a way no one could have imagined.
If you’re mourning the loss of your Plan A, take heart. God hasn’t abandoned you. He’s still writing your story. And while the path ahead might look different from what you envisioned, His promise remains the same.
Practical Steps to Trust God’s Plan
When fear feels overwhelming, and the future seems uncertain, here are some steps to help you lean into God’s plan:
Remember His Faithfulness
Reflect on the times God has carried you through before. His past faithfulness is a reminder that He will continue to be faithful.
Meditate on His Promises
Anchor your heart in God’s Word. Verses like Joshua 1:9, Isaiah 41:10, and Jeremiah 29:11 remind us of His love and guidance.
Take the Next Step
You don’t need to see the whole path. Just take the next step in faith, trusting that God will guide you.
Lean on Community
Share your fears with trusted friends or mentors. Let them pray with you and remind you of God’s love.
Surrender Your Plans
Let go of what was and embrace what is to come. Trust that God’s purpose is greater than your Plan A.
His Promise Is Still Ahead
Friend, if you’ve lost what you thought was your Plan A, know this: God’s promise is still ahead. His purpose for your life is not dependent on the plans you made.
So take heart. Be strong and courageous. Let go of fear, and trust that the God who led Joshua into the Promised Land is leading you too. The path may look different, but His promise remains the same.
“The Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
—Joshua 1:9
You are not alone. God is with you, every step of the way.
