Just Start Where You Are. Presence Not Perfection!

Alright, let’s cut to the chase: God isn’t looking for your perfection. He’s not scanning your life for spotless résumés or gold-star spiritual achievements. What He really wants? Your presence.

So if you’re sitting there thinking, “I’ll come to God once I get my act together,” or “I’ll pray more when I’m less busy,” or “I’ll serve God after I finally kick this bad habit,” let me lovingly tell you—you’re believing a lie. And not just any lie. This is the one that’s kept people stuck in neutral for centuries.

Here’s the truth that’ll set you free: God meets you where you are, not where you think you should be.

The Myth of “Being Ready”

Somehow, we’ve convinced ourselves we need to be “ready” before we can approach God. You know the drill:

  • “I need to pray better before I can pray more.”
  • “I should know more Scripture before I start reading the Bible regularly.”
  • “Once I’m more consistent in my faith, then I’ll really get serious.”
  • “Let me fix my mess first, then I’ll ask God for help.”

Do you see the problem here? It’s the ultimate catch-22. It’s like saying, “I’ll go to the gym once I’m in shape,” or “I’ll call the doctor once I’m healthy.”

Spoiler alert: You go to the gym because you’re out of shape. You call the doctor because you’re not feeling 100%. And you come to God because you’re not perfect.

You don’t have to clean yourself up before coming to Him. You come as you are, and He’s the one who does the cleaning.

Jesus Was All About “Not Ready” People

Let’s take a quick look at Jesus’ squad:

  • Peter: Impulsive, loud, and famously denied Jesus three times. Jesus still called him the rock of the Church.
  • Matthew: A tax collector—basically a professional traitor. Jesus made him an apostle and Gospel author.
  • The Samaritan woman: Five failed marriages, living with a guy who wasn’t her husband, and dodging her neighbors. Jesus turned her into the first evangelist in her town.
  • Paul: Oh, you know, just casually persecuting and killing Christians. Jesus made him the greatest missionary of all time.

Do you see the pattern? None of these people were “ready.” None of them had their lives in order. In fact, by human standards, they were the least qualified.

But Jesus didn’t wait for them to get it together. He met them in their mess and said, “Follow Me.”

God’s Invitation: Come As You Are

Remember the Prodigal Son? (Luke 15:11-32)

That guy didn’t come home with a polished apology or a five-step plan to make things right. He came home broke, broken, and smelling like a pigpen. He was ready to beg for a job as a servant.

But his father? He didn’t even let him finish his speech. He ran to him, embraced him, and threw a party.

That’s your Heavenly Father. He’s not waiting for you to clean yourself up or get your act together. He’s waiting for you to come home.

“But I’ve Tried Before and Failed”

Good! You’ve learned something important: you can’t do this on your own. And guess what? You were never supposed to.

Every failure, every time you’ve fallen short, every moment of “I can’t do this” is an opportunity to lean into God’s strength. Paul reminds us: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).

Your weakness doesn’t disqualify you. It’s the very place where God’s strength shows up. Stop waiting to be strong enough. Start admitting you’re weak enough to need Him.

What “Starting Where You Are” Looks Like

Let me break it down for you: it’s not flashy. It’s not Instagram-worthy. It’s small, quiet, and often messy.

It looks like:

  • Praying for 30 seconds instead of waiting for the “perfect” 30-minute block of time.
  • Reading one verse instead of feeling guilty for not reading three chapters.
  • Whispering, “God, I need You,” in the middle of a chaotic moment.
  • Apologizing today instead of waiting until you’re “better at relationships.”
  • Walking into church with all your mess instead of waiting until you’ve cleaned it up.
  • Asking for prayer instead of pretending you’ve got it all together.

It’s not about having a perfect plan. It’s about taking the next step.

The Enemy’s Favorite Lie

Satan doesn’t need you to reject God outright. He just needs you to believe you’re not ready.

“You’re too messed up.”
“You’ve failed too many times.”
“You don’t know enough.”
“God’s disappointed in you.”

Lies. Every single one of them.

Here’s the truth: God isn’t waiting for your performance. He’s inviting your participation. He’s not demanding your strength. He’s offering His.

Today Is the Day

Not tomorrow. Not next week. Not when you’ve got it all together. Today.

Right now, wherever you are—whether you’re drowning in chaos, battling the same struggle for the hundredth time, or just feeling far from God—this is where He meets you.

Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). Notice He didn’t say, “Come to me once you’ve figured it out.”

He said, “Come as you are—mess, doubts, burdens, and all.”

Take One Small Step

What’s one thing you can do today to move toward God? It doesn’t have to be big. Just one small step:

  • Send up a quick prayer, even if it’s just, “Help me, God.”
  • Open your Bible and read a single verse.
  • Text a friend and ask them to pray for you.
  • Confess something you’ve been hiding.
  • Forgive someone you’ve been holding a grudge against.
  • Say “yes” to something God’s been nudging you to do.

You don’t need to overhaul your life in one day. You just need to start.

God Will Meet You There

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18).

He’s not far away, waiting for you to get your act together. He’s right here, ready to meet you in your mess, your questions, and your struggles.

So stop waiting. Start where you are.

Take one step. He’ll meet you there.

What’s your next step today? I’d love to hear it. Hit reply and let me know—I’m cheering you on and praying for you every step of the way. Let’s do this together, fam 💙.
