Trusting the timing of life is hard. Like, really hard. Especially when it feels like nothing is happening. You’re putting in the effort, saying the prayers, doing all the right things, and yet… crickets.
It’s frustrating, isn’t it? It’s like you’re standing in the eye of a hurricane—everything feels calm, almost too calm—but you just know there’s something swirling around you, just out of sight. Change is happening, but it’s invisible, and that can make it feel like it’s not happening at all.
But here’s the thing: sometimes, the most profound growth happens when it seems like nothing is moving.
The Invisible Growth
Have you ever looked at a garden in the middle of winter? On the surface, it seems like nothing’s going on. The trees are bare, the flowers are gone, and everything looks… dead. But underneath the surface, the roots are working overtime—deepening, strengthening, quietly preparing for spring’s big moment.
Our lives? They’re not so different.
When it feels like you’re stuck, when you’re questioning why things aren’t falling into place, there’s a good chance that something is happening below the surface. Maybe it’s your character being refined, your patience being stretched, or your faith being strengthened. Just because you can’t see the growth doesn’t mean it’s not there.
The Building Blocks of Faith
Here’s the truth no one likes to hear: faith grows best in the waiting.
Think of it like a spiritual gym. Just like your muscles get stronger when you lift weights, your faith strengthens when you face resistance—when you’re forced to trust without seeing the outcome. Those moments when the path ahead is unclear? That’s when your spiritual muscles are being trained for the next season.
I know, I know. No one likes the waiting. We’re wired for instant gratification. We want to see results. But what if the waiting is the work? What if the silence is where God is doing His deepest work in you?
Progress Isn’t Always What It Seems
We live in a world that’s addicted to metrics. Likes, shares, promotions, followers, revenue—whatever the measurement, we want proof that we’re moving forward.
But life doesn’t always work that way.
Some of the most meaningful transformations happen in the quiet. Think about a pearl. It takes years to form inside an oyster’s shell, completely hidden from view. Or consider a seed buried in the soil—it has to break open, grow roots, and push through the dirt before it ever sees the sunlight.
Your life is no different. Just because you can’t see the progress doesn’t mean it’s not happening.
Finding Peace in the Pause
So, what do you do when you’re in the middle of a season that feels like nothing is happening? How do you keep going when you feel like you’re stuck?
Here’s what I’ve learned (and am still learning, because let’s be honest, this is a lifelong lesson):
- Growth isn’t always visible to the naked eye. Just because you can’t see it doesn’t mean it’s not there.
- Stillness can be a form of movement. Sometimes, the best thing you can do is be still and let God work.
- Faith strengthens in the waiting. The longer you wait, the stronger your trust muscles grow.
- Understanding comes through patience. Clarity often comes after the waiting, not during it.
The Power of Trust
Trusting the process when you can’t see any progress? That’s not just hard—it’s a masterclass in faith.
It’s about developing an inner knowing that transcends what your eyes can see or what your feelings are screaming at you. It’s about trusting that God is working, even when everything in you says, “Nothing is happening.”
Think about it this way: God’s timing isn’t just about making you wait. It’s about preparing you. If you’re not ready for what’s ahead, He’s not going to rush the process. He loves you too much for that.
Moving Forward in the Waiting
So, what can you do during these seasons of stillness? How do you keep from going stir-crazy when you feel like you’re stuck in life’s waiting room?
Here are a few things that have helped me:
- Practice Gratitude for the Unseen Work
Even when you don’t see progress, thank God for what He’s doing behind the scenes. Gratitude shifts your focus from what’s missing to what’s already happening. - Journal Your Thoughts and Feelings
Writing things down can help you see subtle shifts in your mindset and emotions over time. Sometimes, looking back on your own words can reveal just how far you’ve come. - Embrace the Silence as a Teacher
Stillness can feel uncomfortable, but it’s often where we learn the most about ourselves and about God. Don’t rush through it—lean into it. - Remind Yourself That Your Story Isn’t Over
Just because you can’t see the next chapter doesn’t mean it’s not being written. Trust that God is still holding the pen.
The Chrysalis Stage
You know how a caterpillar turns into a butterfly, right? There’s a stage in between where it’s in a cocoon, completely still, undergoing a massive transformation. It’s not pretty. It’s not glamorous. But it’s absolutely necessary.
What feels like stagnation in your life might actually be your chrysalis stage. You’re not stuck—you’re transforming. And when the time is right, you’ll emerge stronger, more resilient, and ready for what’s next.
Hebrews 11:1 says, “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
Maybe the most profound growth happens when we can’t see it. Maybe the most powerful changes occur in the quiet. And maybe, just maybe, your breakthrough is closer than you think.
Trust the process. Trust the timing. Trust the One who’s writing your story.
What’s one thing you’re learning in your season of waiting?
