We Asked 10 People 7 Questions About Faith—Here’s What They Said (And Why It Made Me Think About My Own)

Faith. It’s one of those things we talk about a lot, but when you really sit down and try to define it? Well, it’s kind of like trying to nail Jell-O to a wall. It’s personal, messy, and sometimes hard to put into words.

So, we decided to ask 10 people—five men, five women, from all walks of life—seven questions about faith. What they shared was honest, raw, and sometimes even funny. It reminded me that faith isn’t one-size-fits-all. It’s personal, it’s evolving, and it’s often found in the chaos of everyday life.

Oh, and yes, their answers made me laugh, cry, and even rethink a few things about my own faith journey. Let’s dive in.

QUESTION 1: What is faith, really?

Marcus, a 34-year-old business owner, nailed it with this:
“Faith is trusting God when the numbers don’t add up. I’ve launched three businesses, and every single time, the spreadsheet said ‘no way.’ But God kept saying ‘go.’ Faith is acting on His ‘yes’ when your logic screams ‘no.’ It’s terrifying and exhilarating at the same time.”

Can we just pause for a second and appreciate how real that is? I mean, how many times do we let logic talk us out of something God is clearly calling us into?

And then there’s Sarah, a 29-year-old ER nurse. Her perspective hit me hard:
“Faith is knowing this life isn’t all there is. It’s the hope that keeps me standing when I lose a patient at 3 a.m. It’s trusting there’s a bigger story being written, even when I can only see one painful chapter.”

As a dad of special needs twins, this one struck a nerve. There have been so many nights where I’ve had to cling to the hope that there’s a bigger story being written—one where all the chaos and exhaustion and unanswered questions make sense in the end.

QUESTION 2: How do you know God is real?

This question brought out some powerful answers, but Jennifer, a 41-year-old mom, said something that stopped me in my tracks:
“I know God is real because I’ve felt Him in the darkest moments of my life. When my daughter was in the ICU and doctors had no answers, I felt a peace I cannot explain. That wasn’t me. That wasn’t positive thinking. That was God holding me together when I should have fallen apart.”

I’ve been there. Not in an ICU, but in those moments where life feels impossible. When you’re staring down something so big, so overwhelming, and you don’t know how you’re going to make it through. And yet, somehow, you do. Not because you’re strong, but because God is.

QUESTION 3: What do you do when you doubt?

David, a 52-year-old teacher, had this to say:
“I’ve learned that doubt isn’t the opposite of faith—it’s part of faith. When I doubt, I go back to what I know is true. I read Scripture. I remember past faithfulness. I talk to people further along in their journey. Doubt is just faith asking honest questions.”

Can we all just take a deep breath and let that sink in? Doubt isn’t failure. It’s not weakness. It’s part of the process.

Michelle, a 36-year-old entrepreneur, added this:
“I used to hide my doubts, thinking they made me a ‘bad Christian.’ Now I bring them straight to God. I journal. I pray angry prayers. I tell Him exactly what I’m struggling with. And honestly? He can handle it. Every single time, He meets me in the doubt.”

I love this. Angry prayers? Been there. Journaling? Working on it. But seriously, how freeing is it to know that God can handle our doubts, our questions, and even our frustration?

QUESTION 4: Why does God allow suffering?

This one’s tough. It always is. But Robert, a 45-year-old pastor, gave an answer that stuck with me:
“God doesn’t cause suffering, but He uses it. I’ve seen more spiritual growth come through pain than through comfort. The deepest faith I’ve witnessed has been forged in the hardest fires.”

Lisa, a 50-year-old counselor, added:
“God doesn’t promise to remove suffering, but He promises to be present in it. The people who’ve experienced the most healing aren’t the ones who avoided pain—they’re the ones who found God in the middle of it.”

As a special needs dad, I’ve wrestled with this question more times than I can count. Why does God allow the hard stuff? I don’t have all the answers, but I do know this: the hardest seasons of my life have also been the ones where I’ve felt God the closest.

QUESTION 5: How does faith change your daily life?

This one made me smile because the answers were so practical. Marcus, the business owner, said:
“Faith changes how I make decisions. I don’t just ask ‘Will this make money?’ I ask ‘Is this what God’s calling me to?’ My business isn’t just about profit—it’s about purpose.”

And Amanda, a 26-year-old grad student, said:
“Faith changes my Mondays as much as my Sundays. It’s in how I respond when my roommate frustrates me. How I study—knowing my work matters to God. How I spend money. How I choose what to watch. Faith isn’t a Sunday thing—it’s an every-moment thing.”

I love that. Faith isn’t just for Sunday mornings. It’s for Monday mornings when the coffee spills, the kids are late, and you’re wondering if you’ll ever get it together.

QUESTION 6: What’s the difference between religion and relationship?

This question brought out some of the most passionate responses. Robert, the pastor, said:
“Religion is about rules. Relationship is about love. Religion says ‘do these things to earn God’s approval.’ Relationship says ‘God already loves you—now live from that love.’”

And Sarah, the ER nurse, added:
“Religion is checking boxes. Relationship is conversation. I used to think being a ‘good Christian’ meant perfect church attendance and reading my Bible every day. Now I know it’s about talking to God throughout my shift, feeling His presence in hard moments, and knowing He’s with me—not just when I’m doing everything right.”

This one hit home for me. For years, I thought faith was about doing all the “right” things. Now I know it’s about knowing God loves me even when I don’t get it right.

QUESTION 7: How can you grow deeper in faith?

Jennifer, the mom, gave a simple but powerful answer:
“Community changed everything for me. I can’t grow in isolation. My small group knows my struggles, prays for my kids, and calls me out when I’m off track. That’s where growth happens.”

And James, the engineer, said:
“For me, it’s been getting uncomfortable. I volunteer in areas that stretch me. I have conversations about faith that scare me. Comfort zones are where faith plateaus. Growth happens at the edge.”

As someone who has definitely spent too much time saying “yes” to volunteering, I can relate to James. But I also know he’s right—growth happens when we step out of our comfort zones, even if it’s messy and awkward.

What We Learned

Ten people. Seven questions. Countless insights.

What stood out the most? Faith is deeply personal, yet beautifully universal.

Everyone doubts. Everyone struggles. Everyone has moments when God feels distant and moments when His presence is undeniable.

And you know what? That’s okay. Faith isn’t about having all the answers—it’s about trusting the One who does.

Now It’s Your Turn

How would YOU answer these seven questions?

I’d love to hear your story. Drop your answer to any of these questions in the comments, or share this with someone whose faith journey inspires you. Because here’s the thing: faith grows best when we share it.

So, what’s your story? Let’s talk.
