Daily Devotional: Sharpen Each Other

“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” — Proverbs 27:17

The sound of iron sharpening iron is not soft. It’s not gentle. It’s not quiet.

It’s the sound of friction, of sparks flying, of edges grinding against each other until something sharper, stronger, and more effective emerges. And that’s the picture God gives us when He talks about relationships.

We were never meant to go through life alone. We were created for connection, for community, for the kind of relationships that refine us — not just the ones that make us feel good, but the ones that make us better.

But here’s the thing about sharpening: it’s not always comfortable.

When iron sharpens iron, there’s resistance. There’s heat. There’s pressure. And the same is true for us. Relationships that sharpen us often involve tough conversations, uncomfortable truths, and the willingness to hear what we might not want to hear.

It’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it.

The people who sharpen you are the ones who love you enough to challenge you. They speak truth into your life, even when it’s hard. They remind you of who you are when you’ve forgotten. They push you to grow, to stretch, to become the person God created you to be.

And here’s the other side of the coin: you are called to be that person for someone else.

Who are you sharpening? Who are you encouraging, challenging, and walking alongside? Who are you helping to become sharper, stronger, and more effective for the kingdom of God?

This kind of relationship doesn’t happen by accident. It takes time, intentionality, and a willingness to engage in the messy, beautiful process of being refined. But the result? The result is worth every spark, every moment of friction, every challenging conversation.

Because when we sharpen each other, we reflect the image of our Creator. We become tools in His hands, ready to do the work He’s called us to do.

Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the people You’ve placed in my life to sharpen me. Help me to receive their words with humility and grace, even when they challenge me. And help me to be that person for others — to speak truth in love, to encourage, and to walk alongside them as they grow. Thank You for using relationships to shape us into the people You’ve called us to be. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Today’s Reflection:
Who in your life sharpens you? Take a moment today to thank God for them. And who can you be sharpening? Ask God to show you how you can be a source of encouragement, wisdom, and accountability for someone else.

Let’s be iron for one another. Let’s sharpen each other, so we can be ready for the work God has prepared for
