“Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”
— Philippians 2:4
The World’s Small Table
If you listen closely to the world today, you’ll hear a story playing on repeat:
“Look out for yourself.”
“Protect what’s yours.”
“If someone else wins, you lose.”
It’s a story built on fear—the fear that there’s not enough to go around. Not enough love, not enough success, not enough grace. It’s a story that shrinks the table of life down to one chair—yours—and tells you to guard it at all costs.
But Philippians 2:4 offers a different story.
It doesn’t say, “Look to your own interests first, and then see what’s left for others.”
It doesn’t say, “Protect your spot at the table before you help someone else find theirs.”
It says, “Look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.”
This isn’t just a command—it’s an invitation.
The Kingdom’s Bigger Table
Jesus didn’t come to shrink the table. He came to expand it.
The Kingdom of God isn’t a zero-sum game where someone’s gain is your loss. It’s a place where generosity multiplies, where love doesn’t run out, where blessings don’t get divided—they get shared.
Think about the feeding of the five thousand.
One boy brought five loaves and two fish. In the world’s story, that wouldn’t have been enough. But in God’s story, it was more than enough.
Not only did everyone eat, but there were twelve baskets of leftovers.
That’s the kind of table Jesus sets—a table where there’s always room for one more, always enough for everyone, and always grace to spare.
Looking Beyond Yourself
What does it mean to look to the interests of others?
It means stepping outside the story the world tells—the story of scarcity—and stepping into the story of abundance.
It means celebrating someone else’s success instead of resenting it.
It means giving generously, even when it feels risky.
It means seeing your neighbor not as competition, but as someone to love.
It’s not easy. The world’s story is loud, and it’s tempting. But the Kingdom’s story is better.
When you look to the interests of others, you’re not losing—you’re joining Jesus at His table.
A Prayer for Today
Lord,
Thank You for reminding me that Your Kingdom is not a zero-sum world.
Teach me to look beyond myself—to see my neighbor as You see them, to celebrate their blessings, and to love them with the same generosity You’ve shown me.
Help me to trust Your abundance. When I’m tempted to believe there’s not enough to go around, remind me that You are the God who multiplies loaves and fish.
Make my heart bigger today. Make my table longer.
And help me live in the story of Your Kingdom, not the story of the world.
Amen.
Today’s Reflection
Where in your life are you tempted to see someone else’s gain as your loss?
Take a moment to hold that up to Philippians 2:4.
God’s abundance isn’t threatened by your neighbor’s flourishing. The table is big enough. The Kingdom is big enough.
You don’t have to guard your seat.
You can pull up another chair.
Because in God’s story, there’s always room for more.
