Eat with Gladness
A Daily Devotional

“Go, eat your food with gladness, and drink your wine with a joyful heart, for God has already approved what you do.” – Ecclesiastes 9:7

The Sacredness of a Meal

Here’s a question you’ve probably never been asked in church:

What’s on the menu this weekend?

Not in a metaphorical, “What are you feeding your soul?” kind of way. I mean literally — what’s on the grill? What’s in the fridge? What’s that dish you’ve been craving all week but haven’t let yourself enjoy because, well, there’s always something more important to do?

Here’s the thing: God cares about your soul. But He also cares about your body. Your mind. Your joy.

And somewhere along the way, we got it into our heads that the only “spiritual” things are the ones that feel serious, heavy, or productive.

But Ecclesiastes 9:7 tells us something different.

“Eat your food with gladness.”

Not with guilt. Not with a sense that you’re wasting time. Not with a running to-do list in the back of your mind.

Eat with gladness.

Because God already approved it.

The Theology of a Joyful Table

The Bible is full of meals.

From the Passover feast to the wedding at Cana to the Last Supper, some of the most sacred moments in Scripture happen around a table.

Why?

Because food is not just fuel. It’s fellowship. It’s connection. It’s a reminder that God didn’t just create us to work — He created us to enjoy.

When you sit down to a meal with people you love, when you laugh and share stories and pass the bread and pour the drinks, you’re not stepping away from your faith.

You’re living it.

You’re practicing the kind of life God intended for you when He called His creation good.

The Permission You Didn’t Know You Needed

Here’s the part we don’t talk about enough:

God delights in your delight.

He’s not waiting for you to prove your worth through your productivity. He’s not keeping score of how many hours you worked this week or how many spiritual checkboxes you ticked off.

He’s the God who rested on the seventh day. The God who told His people to celebrate with feasts. The God who turned water into wine at a wedding.

He’s the God who says, “Go, eat your food with gladness, and drink your wine with a joyful heart.”

So here’s your permission:

Enjoy the meal.
Enjoy the laughter.
Enjoy the people around the table.

This weekend, let the cookout, the picnic, the barbecue — whatever it is — remind you of the simple truth that God is not just the God of your work. He is the God of your joy.

Today’s Reflection

What’s one thing you can eat or drink with gladness today?

Maybe it’s a meal with your family. Maybe it’s a cup of coffee in the quiet of the morning. Maybe it’s a favorite snack you’ve been saving for a special occasion.

Whatever it is, take a moment to enjoy it.

Not in a rushed, distracted, “let me just get this over with” kind of way.

With gladness.

Because God already approved it.

Today’s Prayer

Lord,

Thank You for being a God who delights in joy.

Thank You for the food on my table, the people in my life, and the moments of rest You invite me into.

Teach me to receive these gifts with gladness. Teach me to see the sacred in the simple. Teach me to trust that You are glorified — not just in my work, but in my joy.

And as I sit at the table this weekend, help me to be fully present. To taste and see that You are good.

Amen.
