“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
— Romans 8:28
🕯️ Reflection
It’s one of the most quoted verses in Scripture.
It’s the verse we cling to when life feels hard, when the pieces don’t seem to fit, when the story we’re living doesn’t look anything like the story we imagined.
And yet, if we’re honest, Romans 8:28 is also one of the hardest promises to believe in the middle of the mess.
Because sometimes, “all things” feels too big.
All things?
The heartbreak? The loss? The betrayal? The waiting? The unanswered prayers? The days when nothing seems to make sense?
How could all of that possibly work for good?
The answer is found in the last part of the verse: “…for those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
Here’s the truth: God’s definition of good is bigger than ours.
We want comfort. He wants transformation.
We want answers. He wants trust.
We want resolution. He wants redemption.
God’s purpose isn’t just to make you happy. It’s to make you whole.
And sometimes, the path to wholeness winds through places we would never choose for ourselves.
🌱 The Beauty of the Bigger Picture
Think about a tapestry.
From the front, it’s a masterpiece — every thread woven together into a picture that tells a story. But if you flip it over, the back looks like a tangled mess of knots and loose ends.
That’s what life feels like most of the time. We’re living on the backside of the tapestry, staring at the knots and wondering how any of it could possibly come together.
But God sees the front.
He sees the picture He’s weaving out of your pain, your waiting, your questions, your faithfulness, your failures, your victories, and your tears.
And He promises this: none of it is wasted.
Not one thread.
Not one knot.
Not one single moment.
🔥 When the Good Doesn’t Feel Good
Here’s the hard part about Romans 8:28: the promise is not that all things are good.
The promise is that God will work all things for good.
Which means some of the things He works with will look and feel like anything but.
The diagnosis. The disappointment. The dream that didn’t come through. The relationship that didn’t work out. The season that feels like it will never end.
God isn’t asking you to call those things good. He’s asking you to trust that His goodness is bigger than the worst of them.
He’s asking you to believe that He is working even when you can’t see how. That He is redeeming even when the pieces still look like a mess. That He is present even in the moments when it feels like He’s silent.
Faith is not pretending everything is fine. Faith is trusting that God is still good — and still working — even when everything is not fine.
🙏 A Prayer for Today
Lord,
I want to believe this promise. I want to trust You. I want to see the good You are working in my life.
But some days, it’s hard.
Some days, the pain feels bigger than the promise. Some days, the waiting feels endless. Some days, the story You’re writing feels more like a mess than a masterpiece.
So today, I’m asking You to help me trust what I can’t yet see.
Help me believe that You are working for my good — even in the pain. Even in the silence. Even in the moments when my faith feels small.
Help me to show up to the life You’ve given me today, trusting that You are weaving something beautiful out of every thread — even the ones I don’t understand.
And help me to remember that Your definition of good is better than mine.
You are good. You are faithful. You are working.
And I choose to trust You.
Amen.
