The Logical Problem: Believing and Retaining Faith in a Scientific World
Faith can be challenging in an advancing, technologically driven world filled with scientific discoveries. But your faith is not a passive faith; rather, it’s a living faith that allows us to face the obstacles in life.
One of my favorite quotations is, “Faith is the strength to weather the storm, not just a waiting game.” This reflects the idea that believing involves taking action against the world, rather than just responding to it.
Science vs. Religion: An Overblown Dichotomy. Merely Siblings That Work With Each Other
Many think of faith and science as enemies. Science and reason draw on empirical fact and logic, but faith often evokes the sublime. However, this relationship is misleading. Both can coexist and deepen our knowledge of the world, they always have, always will.
What Is Faith In A Scientific World?
Faith as Power: When life gets difficult, our belief provides a source of solace and stability. It pushes us to act rather than sink into despair. This experiential engagement is the foundation for surviving individual and social storms.
Positive curiosity: Our faith can and will promote questioning. It is through our faith journey that many scientists have found ways to unlock the secrets of the cosmos and made revolutions, not disprove beliefs.
Moral Theory: Our faith tends to act as the moral guide to science. It urges scientists to think carefully about what their work will do for us and the world. There are many scientist who are deeply faithful.
Actionable Faith: Moving Beyond Passivity
Faith in a scientific world requires us to appreciate the power of action – want to learn more?
Connect to the Community: Engage with religious groups that foster dialogue between science and religion. This can allow for greater awareness of both worlds.
Learn About It: Learn about science and how it intersects with your views and individual beliefs. To grasp the scientific view can actually improve your faith rather than undermine it.
Learn Resilience: Look at struggles as an opportunity to thrive. Our faith inspires us to act when challenges arise: either by serving in the community, advocating or learning from others.
A Harmonious Coexistence
Hence, in short, the rational challenge of our faith in existence with the scientific world is not unachievable. By recognizing that faith requires practice, and engagement, one can get through the pressures of modern life without losing faith. Faith is not just a wait-and-see; it’s the power that keeps us going through life’s storms, and makes us go out and do something about the world. Faith gives the curiosity, the feeling and the knowledge to know that there is something beyond this physical world that science will never be able to explain. Science can only explain the tangible, visible. As intended, everything God has created in the physical world, has an origin.
When we think again about the interrelationship of religion and science, let’s never forget that faith and science go hand in hand and contribute to our lives and our worldview.
