A Daily Devotional on Isaiah 43:1

“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are mine.”Isaiah 43:1

The Name That Holds You Together

It’s early Wednesday morning.

The week is still unfolding, but already, it feels like the weight of everything is pressing down. The responsibilities. The expectations. The things you didn’t get to yesterday. The things you’re already worried about tomorrow.

You’ve been called by a lot of names this week.

Maybe you’ve been called by your job title or your role at home. Maybe you’ve been called by your mistakes or by someone else’s expectations. Maybe you’ve called yourself by names that are far less kind — failure, not enough, too much, unworthy.

But in the middle of all that noise, there’s a voice that speaks louder than all the others.

“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are mine.”

Do Not Fear

We live in a world that gives us plenty of reasons to be afraid.

The news cycle. The uncertainty of tomorrow. The what-ifs that creep into our thoughts in the quiet hours of the night.

But God’s first words to His people in this verse are not a command to fix anything. They’re not a call to action or a demand to try harder.

They’re an invitation:

“Do not fear.”

Why? Not because there’s nothing to be afraid of, but because there is Someone who is bigger than the fear. Someone who sees the end from the beginning and holds it all in His hands.

The command to not fear is not about pretending your worries don’t exist. It’s about remembering who holds you in the middle of them.

Redeemed and Renamed

“I have redeemed you.”

Redemption is such a church word that we sometimes lose the weight of it. But in Isaiah’s time, redemption wasn’t theoretical. It was practical. It was the act of buying something back — paying the price to set someone free.

When God says, “I have redeemed you,” He is saying, “I paid for you. I saw the cost, and I said you were worth it.”

And then He says something even more personal:

“I have called you by name.”

Not by your title. Not by your role. Not by your failure or your success. Not by the names you’ve been called by others or the names you’ve called yourself.

By your name.

The name that belongs only to you. The name He knew before you were born. The name that carries all of who you are — the good, the bad, the broken, the redeemed.

He calls you by name because He knows you.

You Are Mine

The verse ends with three words that are easy to overlook but impossible to overstate:

“You are mine.”

Not, You are mine if you perform well enough.
Not, You are mine as long as you don’t mess up.
Not, You are mine until you fail again.

Just this:

“You are mine.”

It’s the kind of belonging that doesn’t depend on your circumstances. That doesn’t waver when you feel thin or tired or overwhelmed. That doesn’t disappear when you make a mistake or fall short or feel like you’re not enough.

It’s the kind of belonging that holds you together when the week feels like it’s pulling you apart.

You are His.

You are not a number. Not a task. Not a role.

You are His.

A Midweek Reflection

Take a moment this morning to pause and sit with this question:

What names have I been answering to this week?

And do they sound anything like the name God calls me?

If they don’t, let them go.

Because the only name that matters today is the one He has already spoken over you.

Redeemed.
Beloved.
Mine.

A Prayer for Today

Lord,

This week has been loud.

So many voices calling me by so many names. Some of them are true. Some of them are not. Some of them are too heavy to carry for another day.

But this morning, I want to hear Your voice above all the others.

Call me by my name. The one You gave me. The one that reminds me who I am when I’m tempted to forget.

Thank You for redeeming me. Thank You for seeing me, knowing me, and loving me — not because of what I’ve done, but because of who You are.

Let me walk through this day with the quiet confidence that I am Yours.

Amen.
